Ashley Janke: nAbr Gallery

February 9, 2013 - April 1, 2014

Ashley Janke is a multidisciplinary artist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Janke utilizes platforming and installation to investigate—and critique--the spatial and social atmospheres created by formal exhibition. In addition to nAbr (not-a-bed-room) gallery, which Janke began in 2010, other serial projects include the White Table; CHIPS, a collaboration with James Pederson and Brad Fiore; Imagination Giants, which she co-directs with Lara Ohland and Tim Stoelting; and Riverwest Satellite Night, run in coordination with the Riverwest Artist Association. She received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2012.

nAbr GALLERY

nAbr (not-a-bed-room) gallery is a re-constructed platforming project which consists of walls, a name, a collaborator and an exploration of exhibition. Since the small white cube structure opened in the attic of Janke’s Riverwest home in 2010, the nAbr gallery project has evolved in format and location, moving from a field in Tuscany, to a warehouse in Chicago, and back to Milwaukee. Previous partners in the project have included the Art Shanty Projects, the MDW Fair and MKE<->LAX.

The unfinished exterior reveals the utilitarian materials used to support the artifice of an unbiased, white-walled interior. While the exterior sets up a visual expectation for the exhibition, the placement of the doorway and, on occasion, the ceiling act as framing mechanisms directing the awareness of the audience to the surrounding environment. Each manifestation of nAbr works with different artists who respond to the specific environment, accentuating characteristics in each re-location.

For Janke’s residency at Lynden, an outdoor iteration of the nAbr gallery has been constructed on the grounds. Consisting only of studded walls and no ceiling, this nAbr will house artists selected by Janke for a series of rotating exhibitions over the course of a year. Subject to the elements, like the gallery itself, the work the artists create will reflect the time and season of each installation.
